Chances are you have probably heard about bulletproof coffee. Or maybe you have seen or heard of someone adding butter to their coffee. If you have not heard of it, I am happy to be the first to share with you about bulletproof coffee!
Bulletproof coffee was originated by Dave Asprey, who is a successful entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. He is also an author and most well known for his book Bulletproof Diet documenting his journey as a bio-hacker for increased human performance. In simple terms, he is an incredibly smart man, and bio-hacking basically means that he applied his computer programming/hacking methodology to his body and figured out how to get increased performance through the food that he eats.
In his book Dave shares that he was severely overweight and tried every diet and exercise under the sun; sometimes he would loose weight, but if he did, he would gain it right back. This yo-yo journey continued…until he applied biohacking to his body and he cracked the code to his now remarkable weight loss & leading a sustainable healthy lifestyle! I am working on reading the book right now and have to say I can agree with the majority of his points. However, I feel the need to say, just like what we teach in our essential oils classes, we are all “bio-individuals”. Which means that which works for one person, doesn’t necessarily get you the exact same result with another person. So you don’t know how your body will react to it unless you try it for yourself!
We’ve been doing bulletproof coffee for over 2 months now and we definitely feel increased energy, more mental clarity, and have both lost a few pounds along this journey. During this journey we have also experimented with making it in various versions, and I can say we have found what we like best, and I truly think this is an upgrade from what Dave Asprey originally created.
So let’s talk about what makes a coffee “bulletproof coffee”. Basically it comes down to coffee beans, MCT oil, and grassfed butter. To be “officially” bulletproof coffee, you would need to use Dave Asprey’s coffee beans, as well as his MCT oil. However, I don’t necessarily think his coffee beans are necessary. As long as you are using high quality organic coffee beans, we get the same effect. As for MCT oil, there are many brands out there now; the official Bulletproof branded MCT oil is a bit more expensive, and I personally don’t think it’s necessarily better quality. After trying a few brands (Dave’s included), I’ve settled with Nutiva Organic MCT Oil. I made that choice for multiple reasons: 1) it’s a brand I trust, 2) it’s Certified Organic, 3) it actually says how much and what type of MCT you are getting per serving, and 4) it is not processed with Hexane. (If you want to dive deeper into understanding what MCT oil is & how to select the best one, check out our more-in depth blog post here.)
Now let’s get to the nitty gritty of how to make our “better than original version” of bulletproof coffee! Here’s what you need:
Fresh brewed coffee, MCT oil, grassfed butter, cacao powder, himalayan pink sea salt. We’ve tried making the coffee in various styles–Chemex pour over coffee, automatic drip brew, and french press–and have found we prefer the taste of our bulletproof coffee with french press style.
It is very important to get grassfed butter, Dave gets much more into this in his book. For now, just trust the research. We highly recommend getting Kerrygold butter, it’s the best thing out there, and you can find it at Costco!
Cacao is a great anti-inflammatory, it has more antioxidants than blueberries (and blueberries are known for their antioxidants!). Not only is it great for your body, it tastes amazing when blended in. Almost like a mocha!
Himalayan Sea Salt is great source of minerals, and just a tiny pinch brings all the flavors out!
To emulsify it all together, we have our trusty Vitamix! You can do this with any blender, magic bullet, even an immersion blender. We love our Vitamix, so that’s our tool of choice!
This coffee has enough calories to be a meal replacement. For women, you might find yourself needing a bit more food than just a cup of joe. Try adding some protein powder or collagen powder, or a hardboiled egg or two if you find yourself needing more food. We get more into this in our Intermittent Fasting blog post.
Caution: Do not consume more than 1 TBL of MCT Oil at one time. It can trigger a trip to the bathroom. If at 1 TBL MCT you are getting trips to the bathroom, try lowering the amount to 1 tsp to start, and gradually work your way up to a full tablespoon over the course of a week.
